What Causes Backflow?
Backflow occurs under two conditions. The first is back-pressure, when downstream pressure exceeds supply pressure. This is often caused by boiler systems, pumps, or elevated piping.
The second is back-siphonage, a negative pressure event that can happen during a main break or high-demand period on the municipal line, essentially siphoning water backward through the system. Either way, the result is the same: water that shouldn't be in your pipes ends up there.

A backflow preventer is a mechanical device installed at the point where your water supply connects to a potential contamination source, such as your irrigation system, fire suppression line, or commercial equipment. These devices use check valves to ensure water can only flow one way.
